Today We Go Home by
Unboxing of Once Upon A Book Club October Adult Box
This dual timeline story followed the journey of two women in the military. Larkin Bennett's story occurs in current times. She is a US Army veteran suffering from PTSD after serving in Afghanistan. Afer receiving a medical discharge, she has a difficult time adjusting to what comes after.
Larkin comes upon the diary of Emily Wilson, whose point of view we also get to experience.
Emily disguised herself as a man to fight in the Civil War. Reading about Emily's struggle and perseverance in the military helps Larkin come to terms with some of her own demons.
I've heard the story of Mulan disguising herself as a man to join the military (Thanks to Disney, who hasn't heard this story?!) But this book brought to my attention the fact that women have done this throughout time, in many countries. It really piqued my interest and prompted me to research women "undercover" in the military!
I love that this book gives readers a chance to see inside the world of women in the military. I cried a lot as I read this book, thinking of all my friends and family who have served and those who continue to serve.
"She would never again settle for a life where her every action, even her thoughts, were controlled by someone else. From now on, no matter where life took her, she would live on her own terms."
"Women had always been badass, and it was time the world acknowledged that."
What was inside the box:
This box has been one of my favorites. There was so much detail and so many parts to some of the gifts. Items included a tube of lipstick, a letter, johnny cake mix with a spatula, a journal, a ring, and a handkerchief.
